Good calibres to start you on your firearms journey. The .22lr, cheap, lots of choice, not that loud and no recoil. A .223 will get you out to around 500 yards but is ideal for 100 – 200. A .308 will go further to 1000 at a push but 800 will be fine.
Please note that this is my opinion based on experience, years in the gun trade blah, blah, blah. Base you calibre choice on your club, budget and what you want. Most of all, enjoy the sport! Rack.
