I came out to New York expecting a hunt — the kind I know well from back home in the UK, where deer numbers are high and management is, by necessity, fairly pragmatic and often kept out of sight.
But this felt different.
I travel to hunt not just for the adventure, but to better understand how people approach it around the world — the culture, the thinking, the “why” behind it all. And here in the Hudson Valley, I found myself stepping into a conversation that sits somewhere between hunting, ecology, and the long-term health of the landscape.
Before we’d even arrived, a bit of research made one thing clear — in parts of this region there are simply more deer than these forests were ever meant to carry.
This film isn’t about pointing fingers.
It’s about spending time with the people closest to the issue — hunters, scientists, land managers — and trying to understand what happens when those worlds overlap.
Because if there are too many deer… what does that actually mean?
And more importantly — what do you do about it?
